My Approach

I coach individuals and teams by drawing on my experience with early stage founders and my doctoral training in counseling. As a professional engaged with a vocation that impacts people, I believe my view of people is paramount. It transcends my work regardless of role or venue (coach, therapist, educator, facilitator). I believe people are exceedingly deep. We are complex creatures that are not easily reduced. Further, we are inherently relational creatures. We live and breathe in the context of relationships. In fact, we have never known a moment of life without relating to another. Because of this, the impact of coaching should be viewed through a relational lens. I also believe that narratives shape our lives. We are all in the process of living into old narratives as well as authoring new ones. When we begin to explain our life, our passion, and our challenges, we tell stories. At the intersection of our inherent relational nature with our propensity to construct narratives is the embodiment of our stories. Our primary narratives become so deeply engrained in us that they impact our entire person.

The Helping Relationship

Individual coaching is built on utilizing the helping relationship (Safran & Muran; Schein). This relationship forms the foundation for growth by cultivating trust, honesty, and collaborative engagement. Without this foundation, individual coaching is less impactful and is often reduced to advice and strategies. With this foundation, I strive to create space for people to hear themselves more clearly in order to help identify paths of growth.

The Focal Point of Coaching

Coaching utilizes the helping relationship in order to encourage professional and vocation growth for individuals. While coaching conversations may venture deep into the internal world, personal life, or family of origin for the individual, these are explored in the service of vocational and professional development.

The specific goals associated with this focal point will be collaboratively identified. Once identified, we will work together to find engagements in and between coaching sessions that will serve to progress toward the identified goals.
